Whitening FAQ
Will whitening cause tooth sensitivity?
Tooth sensitivity can occur as a result of whitening. If sensitivity occurs, it is temporary and typically disappears within a few days after the completion of whitening treatments. Opalescence already includes desensitizers in its whitening products to minimize this, but patients can additionally use desensitizing toothpaste to help with any sensitivity.
How many office appointments do I need for whitening?
As long as you've had a recent cleaning and exam at our practice, Opalescence Go kits do not require an appointment. Since Opalescence PF is customized to your specific smile, it requires two short doctor appointments to take impressions for your custom trays, and then to deliver the kit with a short demo by our staff.
How long is the treatment?
With the Opalescence Go kit, you have a 10 day supply of upper & lower trays to whiten your smile, wearing the trays 15-20 minutes each day. With Opalescence PF, you can whiten your teeth daily for a maximum of 10 days, wearing the custom trays 15-30 minutes per day. You may "touch up" your smile at a later time with your existing trays and/or any extra whitening gel you may have, or touch-up kits sold separately.
Can I eat and drink normally during the 10 days?
Yes, but for optimal results, you should wait 1 hour after removing the trays before eating or drinking anything other than water. Also, try to avoid dark, staining foods and habits such as red wine, dark sauces/curries, and smoking for the ten days.
How long do whitening results last?
Teeth whitening results are very stable, leaving you with a whiter smile long after after treatment is over. However, there are factors that make teeth lose their brightness, such as diet or habits such as smoking. Fortunately, touch up treatments are quick and easy, helping you get that whiter smile back.
Can I use my Invisalign aligners to whiten my teeth instead of needing custom whitening trays?
You can, but to safely do so, you can only use the weakest strength of whitening gel with your aligners, wearing it for 8-10 hours a day for up to 10 days. Custom whitening trays are designed differently to allow safe use of the strongest concentration. For adults, we generally recommend using the Opalescence Go kit if you've already finished your Invisalign treatment, but consult with your hygienist or doctor first.
